To plan for next time, other methods of copying the NTUSER.DAT file include logging in as a different administrator account, or booting the machine in Safe Mode. 1 I ran an update on my computer last night (June 18, 2022) which was the latest update, I believe. If you don't already have a recent backup copy of the NTUSER.DAT file, you'll need to look at a different method to fix the issue. If it is still in use while logged in as a different administrator, you'll need to reboot the computer to free the file from being in use. You should login as a different administrator account to restore the NTUSER.DAT file since that file can't be changed while it's in use. Some example backup applications include: Comodo Backup, Acronis, Macrium, Intronis, etc. You will needed to have used a 3rd Party application to backup this file since it normally cannot be backed up while in use. Instructions are on this webpage but uncheck the box "Hide protected operating system files" also: You will need to enable viewing of protected operating system files to see this file. The hidden system file NTUSER.DAT is located here: On the right pane, right-click the Scancode Map value and click Delete > Yes. In the address bar beneath the menu, input: Computer\HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout. or, see below on suggestions for backing this file up for next time. Go to View and click Address Bar if it isn't ticked. I have a Dell Precision laptop and dock with three monitors. If you do not have an earlier backup of the NTUSER.DAT file, please look at one of the other methods (steps) in this How-To. If you have an earlier but recent version of this file, you may fix the issue by replacing the NTUSER.DAT file with an earlier version. The issue happens because the hidden system file NTUSER.DAT becomes corrupted.
